Stockholm Ferries: Which Quay and Which Boat Before You Book

The harbour is split across several quays. Knowing which one your boat leaves from is the first step of a Stockholm ferry plan.

Stockholm's boats do not leave from one terminal. The port company, Ports of Stockholm, describes Stadsgården and Värtahamnen as the central ports for goods and passengers travelling to and from Finland and the Baltic states, and Frihamnen as the port that matters for international cruise traffic. Archipelago boats sail from other quays again. Our Stockholm ferry hub lists the routes; this guide explains how to sort them out before you book.

1. Why the quay matters

Ports of Stockholm is owned by the City of Stockholm, according to its company page. Its own pages say roughly half of the cruise ships visiting Stockholm each year call at Frihamnen, while Stadsgården also receives international cruise vessels. A ferry you book may therefore leave from a different quay from the one your cruise ship uses, so the first question is not "which ferry" but "which quay".

2. Which quay serves which boat

QuayWhat the sources say leaves from there
VärtahamnenPorts of Stockholm: all Tallink Silja ferries depart from the Värtahamnen terminal, at Hamnpirsvägen 10.
StadsgårdenPorts of Stockholm: all Viking Line ferries depart from the Viking Line terminal here; international cruise vessels also moor at the quay.
StrömkajenPorts of Stockholm: the Strömma sightseeing boats and the Waxholmsbolaget archipelago boats depart from here.
StrandvägenStrömma: the Vaxholm boats leave from here (S/S Stockholm from berth area 16, M/S Cinderella II from berth area 14).
NynäshamnPorts of Stockholm: a mainland port for services to Gotland, 60 km south of Stockholm.

We could not open the Viking Line website today (the server refused the request), so this guide says nothing about its routes or timetables. Ask the company directly.

3. The overnight ship to Helsinki

Tallink's route page says the ships depart from the Värtahamnen terminal in the late afternoon and arrive at the Olympia Terminal in Helsinki in the morning of the next day. It gives the voyage as approximately 17 hours, names Silja Serenade and Silja Symphony, and describes daily departures all year. Tallink's terminal page also lists Baltic Queen to Tallinn's D-Terminal and Baltic Princess to Turku from Värtahamnen; we did not open a route page for those, so check them separately.

Tallink's terminal page states that ticket registration ends 30 minutes before departure and access to the ship closes 20 minutes before departure. It says the terminal building is open every day from 05:30 to 17:30 (the Ports of Stockholm page gives the same opening hours as 5.30 am to 5.30 pm). For getting there, Tallink lists shuttle buses between Värtahamnen and Cityterminalen and Djurgården, with a travel time of approximately 20 to 30 minutes, and SL bus 76 to central Stockholm. The page warns that the departure gate at Cityterminalen may change daily, so check the screens inside.

4. The archipelago boats

Waxholmsbolaget describes itself as part of public transport in Region Stockholm. It says you cannot reserve a seat on its vessels, and that some departures from smaller islands run only if someone asks for them and must be ordered in advance. It says timetables show how traffic is planned and that vessels can change at short notice. It changes timetable four times a year, and some lines run only part of a period. Its start page, read on 29 October 2026, carried notices about piers closed for renovation, for example Bromskär pier on Blidö, which a notice said was closed until June 2027 with line 28 not stopping there. Treat that as a dated example of why you check before you travel, not as a current rule.

Strömma's Vaxholm page lists the steamship S/S Stockholm at 1 hour 30 minutes and the faster M/S Cinderella II at 50 minutes. For S/S Stockholm it lists a 12:00 departure on Saturdays and Sundays from 3 October to 27 December 2026, and, in the part of its list for the following summer, daily departures at 12:00 and 15:00 from 19 June to 12 September. It says tickets must be booked in advance and that a sold-out departure has no tickets on board. As the page states it, you can return on a later departure or by an SL bus from Vaxholm to Tekniska Högskolan, which it gives as about 45 minutes. The Cinderella II timetable is on a separate page that we did not open.

5. Access, luggage and what to ask

Questions worth putting in writing: which vessel will run my departure, how steep is the gangway, who meets me at the quay, and what happens if the boat is swapped at short notice.

6. Keeping a margin before your ship leaves

The Helsinki crossing is an overnight sailing of approximately 17 hours, so it is a travel day, not a port-day outing. For an archipelago day, build the plan backwards from your ship's all-aboard time, not forwards from the boat's departure, and allow for the possibility that a boat is replaced or a pier is closed. Two guides cover this: why separate tickets need a buffer and the all-aboard worksheet. Back to the Stockholm ferry hub for the route cards.

Checked on 29 October 2026: Ports of Stockholm (about us, company facts, port areas, passenger terminal pages), Tallink (Stockholm to Helsinki route page, ports and terminals page, accessibility page), Waxholmsbolaget (start page, travel, timetable and accessibility pages) and the Strömma Vaxholm page. We could not open Viking Line, and we did not open Destination Gotland, SL or Cinderella boat pages. No prices are quoted: check each operator before you book.
