Boats from Stockholm to Vaxholm, the archipelago, Gotland and Helsinki
Which boats leave Stockholm for Vaxholm, Sandhamn and Grinda, Gotland and Helsinki: operators, journey times as the sources state them, seasons, and when we last checked.
Stockholm sits on an archipelago, and the Strömma boats leave from Strandvägen in the city centre for Vaxholm and the islands. Destination Gotland sails from Nynäshamn to Visby, and Tallink Silja runs the overnight ferry to Helsinki from Värtahamnen. Each card gives the figures as the source states them and says when we last checked.
How it works
Several archipelago routes are seasonal. The Cinderella island boats list a 2027 season of 30 April to 26 September, so they were not running when we checked; for the autumn the page lists a weekend-only steamship service to Vaxholm.
Two boats serve Vaxholm from Strandvägen: the steamship S/S Stockholm on the scenic route and the faster M/S Cinderella II, and they leave from different berths.
The Helsinki sailing is an overnight crossing of about 17 hours with an evening departure, so it is a travel day rather than a day trip.
A ticket is not a guaranteed seat and sailings can change with the weather.
Ferries
Stockholm (Strandvägen) → Vaxholm
Operators: Strömma
Journey time: 1 hour 30 minutes on the steamship S/S Stockholm (scenic route) and 50 minutes on M/S Cinderella II (fast route), as the operator's page states.
When it runs: The page lists weekend-only departures from 3 October to 27 December and daily departures from 19 June to 12 September 2027 (12:00 and 15:00). The Cinderella II timetable is on a separate page.
Timetables and journey times change by season and operator, and a ticket is not a guaranteed seat. Every card says when we last checked and links the page we read; confirm on the operator's own page before you plan around a departure. We list operators' own pages and do not earn commission on these links.
