Auckland Ferry Guide: Waiheke, Devonport and Ship Days

More than one operator, more than one pier, and ferry delays on days when cruise ships move.

Our Auckland ferry page lists the boats from the Downtown Ferry Terminal. Auckland Transport (AT), the regional transport authority, gives these journey times from the terminal: 12 minutes to Devonport and 40 minutes to Waiheke Island, with other suburban destinations at 35 minutes. This article is about the checking that comes before the crossing.

1. Cruise-ship days affect the ferries

AT's cruise ship page, last updated on 11 April 2026, says ferry trips can be delayed or cancelled while cruise ships arrive and depart, because the engine thrusters of cruise ships cause dangerous underwater currents in the shared ferry basin. It says Ports of Auckland does not allow cruise ships to arrive or depart during commuting peaks, that delays and cancellations can still happen outside peak times, and that you should check AT Mobile Live Departures before catching a ferry.

The same page carries a table of estimated arrival and departure times for ships. As examples of how it reads, it lists Celebrity Edge for 5 November 2026 as arriving at 4:30am and departing at 7:05pm, and Silver Moon for 31 January 2027 as arriving at 5:30am and departing at 7:05pm. AT says schedules can change at short notice and points to the Ports of Auckland cruise schedule. We have not checked any particular ship, so read your own ship's all-aboard time.

2. Who runs what, and from which pier

Fullers360 runs Waiheke boats. Its Waiheke timetable page, read on 30 October 2026, shows the departure as Auckland City and says the journey is approximately 40 minutes; the page text we read does not name the pier, so check your ticket. AT says Island Direct also runs a Waiheke service and gives its Auckland boarding point as pier 13/14 at the Downtown Ferry Terminal; Island Direct's own site gives Pier 13 and an office at 117 Quay Street. A timetable site that says it is not affiliated with AT or any operator lists the Devonport ferry from Pier 1. Pier numbers can change, so read the pier on your ticket rather than on this page.

That site, which draws its data from AT and Fullers360, says the Devonport crossing takes about 12 minutes and that ferries run every 15 to 30 minutes in the day. AT's own page gives the 12 minutes.

3. Waiheke: what the timetable says

RouteCrossing as the operator lists itWhat the page says about times
Auckland to Waiheke (Fullers360)Approximately 40 minutesFirst sailing 6:00 AM Monday to Saturday, last 11:45 PM; Sundays and public holidays 7:00 AM to 10:15 PM

Fullers360 marks some sailings with an asterisk: they go via Devonport and take approximately 10 minutes longer. The Waiheke page says return tickets do not include a stopover at Devonport and that getting off there means an additional fare for the trip back to Auckland. Timetables change, so read the page for your own date.

4. Tickets and paying

AT says to buy a ticket before you board, from ticket machines at the terminals or with an AT HOP card or contactless payment where accepted. It says you cannot pay with contactless methods on Fullers Waiheke commercial ferries but can on Island Direct's Waiheke service, and that AT HOP cards are not valid for Rangitoto ferries. For Rangitoto, AT points to the Fullers360 website. At the Downtown Ferry Terminal, AT says an AT HOP card can be bought at its Customer Service Centre on Pier 1.

Fullers360 says Priority tickets require booking a sailing time in advance, and Reserve tickets are valid only for the date and time booked. For Island Direct, AT says tickets can be bought online and that, if some are unsold, you can walk on and buy in person, but capacity is limited. We do not quote fares; check them on the operator's page before you book.

5. Accessibility, luggage and comfort

AT's ferry accessibility page says wheelchairs can be taken aboard most ferries and to check with the operator before travelling; that assistance from a suitable waiting point can be arranged with the operator in advance; that on board you can ask the crew; and that service dogs and disability assist dogs are welcome on all ferry services. Its ferry-use page says most ferries have ramps for wheelchairs and mobility scooters and asks passengers to watch for raised doorsills and uneven surfaces. Fullers360's own accessible-travel page did not open for us, so we cannot say what it states.

For a day trip, AT says luggage storage facilities are available at the Downtown and Waiheke ferry terminals if you travel to or from Waiheke for a day. It gives no price or size limit on that page. For comfort and luggage on any crossing, see our luggage, cabins and toilets checklist.

6. Great Barrier Island, and keeping a margin

A booking-agent site for Great Barrier Island, Go Great Barrier Island, says SeaLink sailings take approximately 4.5 hours to Tryphena, run three times a week in winter and daily in summer. The page names Wynyard Wharf as the departure point in one place and Hamer Street, Downtown, in another, so we cannot say which is right; confirm with SeaLink. It is not a day trip from a ship.

For a day from a cruise ship, work backwards from your ship's all-aboard time with the all-aboard worksheet, and read why separate tickets need a buffer. Check the last ferry back; AT says delays can occur on days when cruise ships move. If a sailing is cancelled, our plan B guide goes through the options. Then return to the Auckland ferry page.

Checked on 30 October 2026: Fullers360's Waiheke timetable page (its Rangitoto page did not load for our check, so this guide gives no Rangitoto times); Auckland Transport's cruise ship, ticket information, using ferries, ferry destinations and ferry accessibility pages; Island Direct's home page; the AKL Ferries Devonport timetable page; Go Great Barrier Island's SeaLink page. Not opened: Fullers360's accessible-travel and about pages (blocked), SeaLink's own site, the Ports of Auckland cruise page. No fares are quoted. Check every detail with the operator before you book.
