The Canary Islands are Europe's winter-sun cruise, and the first pricing fact is that two very different products share the name. One is a seven-night fly-cruise, looping the islands from Tenerife or Gran Canaria. The other is a twelve-to-fourteen-night round trip from Southampton with three or four sea days at each end. They suit different travellers, they cost different money, and confusing them is the classic mistake. Here is what each really costs in 2026.
Two products, two price lists
The fly-cruise: seven nights round trip from Tenerife or Gran Canaria, calling at four or five islands plus usually Madeira or a Morocco port. MSC runs exactly this — a Fantasia week from Tenerife this December is typical of the format. Interiors on these mainstream seven-nighters commonly list in the $600–1,000 band, balconies $1,200–1,900, with Christmas and New Year weeks at the top of the range or above it.
The no-fly: twelve to fourteen nights from Southampton — Fred Olsen's Canaries sailings start from £1,199 per person. Per night it is decent value, but you are paying for, and spending, six to eight days at sea, and the Bay of Biscay in January is not a sun deck. For the right traveller — hates airports, loves sea days — it is the better product; just price it knowing what the days are.
The fare by month
The islands sit at 20–28°C all year, so demand follows the northern winter, not the local weather: November–March is peak, Christmas and New Year the most expensive sailings of all, and April–October the value window. Flights
For the fly-cruise, the airfare is half the battle. New York–Tenerife round trips currently list from about $683 one-stop, and one-way deals from $213 appear. The trap is the calendar: flights over Christmas and February half-term can double the careful fare, and they sell out long before the cabin does. Price the flight first — a cheap cruise attached to a $1,200 flight is not a cheap holiday.
Tips
Mainstream lines add $16–18 per person per day — $112–126 on a seven-nighter — plus the automatic 18–20% on bar and spa bills.
Excursions: the real budget
Good news: the Canaries are among the cheapest cruise destinations in the world for days ashore. Current per-person prices:
- DIY: Tenerife's Teide cable car runs about €40 return (prices shift with demand); island buses cost a few euros a ride; the beach promenades are free. A self-guided island day comes in at $20–50.
- Independent tours: Timanfaya National Park on Lanzarote: the official Montañas del Fuego volcano-route ticket is €30, sold by CACT, the island's official sites operator; guided express tours sit in the $50–90 band.
- Ship tours: $60–120 for the same volcanoes and viewpoints — a modest premium here, so book on convenience, not fear.
Unlike Alaska, nothing here requires a helicopter; unlike the Amalfi Coast, nothing here requires beating yacht prices. Every island is a reasonable DIY day. The one decision that matters is Teide: book the cable car online ahead, because same-day slots go early in winter. The general framework is in ship excursion or independent.
The cost nobody tells you about
The flight premium, covered above, is the big one: the sailing is priced for a market that can drive to Southampton or hop a cheap European flight, and a US traveller pays a second, unadvertised entry fee in airfare. Budget the flight first.
Second, on the no-fly version: the winter sea days. Twelve to fourteen nights from Southampton means roughly half the trip at sea in November-to-March weather, some of it lumpy. If you would enjoy that, the value is real; if you would not, the fly-cruise costs less than it looks once the extra days are counted.

Per person for a seven-night fly-cruise, flights included, from most of the US:
- Careful budget: about $1,300–1,700 — interior in the shoulder weeks, the cheap flight, DIY islands.
- Comfortable mid-range: $2,200–3,200 — balcony, Christmas avoided, one or two booked tours.
- Peak season done fully: $4,000 and up — Christmas week balcony, the good flight times.
