Victoria and Butchart Gardens: Can It Fit Your Port Call?

A beautiful garden, a 35-to-60-minute trip each way. Do the arithmetic before you go.

Many Alaska and Pacific Northwest cruises call at Victoria, British Columbia, often for an evening or a few hours. Butchart Gardens is the best-known excursion. The question is not whether it is worth seeing, but whether it fits your call.

1. Where the ship docks

The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority says cruise ships berth at Ogden Point in the Breakwater District, and that visitors can walk or take shuttles into the city. The gardens' own directions page says the terminal is about a 20-minute walk from downtown, with a shuttle to downtown that takes 5 to 7 minutes.

2. Getting to the gardens

HowWhat the gardens say
DistanceAbout 22 km (13.5 miles) from Victoria
Car or taxiA 35 to 45 minute drive depending on traffic; taxis wait outside the cruise terminal (roughly CAD 60 to 65 to the gardens)
Public busRoute 75 from Belleville Street at Government Street, generally 50 minutes to an hour; not every afternoon-commute trip goes into the gardens, so check the sign or ask the driver
Shuttle / sightseeing busDeparts in front of the Empress Hotel; reservations are not required and tours run daily

3. At the gardens

Hours change through the year (the gardens' November notice, for example, gives gates open from 10:00 to 16:30), so check the hours page for your date. The gardens lend push wheelchairs free with a refundable deposit (without handbrakes), have no mobility scooters to rent on site, list the paths with steeper grades, and store luggage free of charge.

4. Does it fit? A simple test

Add: time from the ship to your transport, the trip there, the visit you want, the trip back, the walk to the ship, and the margin you want before all-aboard. If the total is more than your time ashore, choose a closer plan, such as the Inner Harbour and downtown, which the harbour authority describes as steps from the waterfront.

5. Ship tour or on your own?

On a short evening call, the cruise line's own tour moves the timing risk off you: Royal Caribbean, for example, guarantees the ship waits for delayed tours booked through it but not for guests on their own. Compare the actual terms (see ship or independent).

For the gardens' access details see walking, steps and standing; ferries from the region: Seattle ferry hub.
