Sydney Ferry Guide: Circular Quay, Manly, Taronga and the Parramatta River

Circular Quay is a short walk from the cruise terminal, but the wharf you need depends on the service you choose.

Sydney's harbour ferries leave from Circular Quay, a short walk from the Overseas Passenger Terminal where the larger cruise ships dock. Our Sydney ferry hub lists the routes; this guide explains how to tell the public ferry lines from the private services, and what to check before you cross the harbour on a port day.

1. From the ship to the ferry wharves

Destination NSW's cruise page says larger cruise ships dock at Circular Quay, at the Overseas Passenger Terminal, and that White Bay Terminal sits further into the harbour in Rozelle. It does not give a distance for White Bay, so if your ship berths there, check with your cruise line how to reach the city.

Port Authority of NSW says Circular Quay Station is "just a 5-minute walk away (450 metres)" from the Overseas Passenger Terminal, and that you can "take a ferry to Circular Quay, which is just 450 metres from the Overseas Passenger Terminal". The same page says Circular Quay Station offers direct train services to the airport station. If you are flying in, our flights index covers the flight leg.

2. The public lines and the private ones

Transport for NSW lists the Sydney Ferries network as numbered lines, including F1 Manly, F2 Taronga Zoo, F3 Parramatta River and F9 Watsons Bay. Its route pages load their timetables by script, so we could not read times from them. Open the Transport for NSW page for your line on the day and read the departures from your wharf.

Private operators also use Circular Quay. Manly Fast Ferry describes a "Daily fast ferry service between Manly Wharf 2 and Circular Quay Wharf 2" with "20 minutes travel time", and says it is an Opal network service. Taronga Zoo's page says Captain Cook Cruises and NRMA Fantasea services are available as well as the public ferry. Treat them as separate services with their own timetables and wharves.

3. Where each line goes

DestinationWhat the pages saySource
ManlyDestination NSW: "the 30-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay". Manly Fast Ferry: "20 minutes travel time" for its own fast service.sydney.com; Manly Fast Ferry
Taronga ZooTaronga Zoo: "12 minutes from Circular Quay" and "Ferries depart every 30 minutes from Circular Quay Wharf 4"; the Lower Zoo Entrance is a "3-minute walk from wharf". The page does not say which days or hours this covers.taronga.org.au
Watsons BayDestination NSW: a ferry from Circular Quay "takes less than 20min".sydney.com
ParramattaDestination NSW: "The scenic trip is about 85 minutes."sydney.com

Note that the Manly and Taronga figures come from different services. Manly Fast Ferry's own wharf has changed: when we read it on 30 October 2026, its page still said it will return to Circular Quay Wharf 2 from Monday, 20 July 2026, a date that has passed. Read the wharf on the page of the operator you plan to use, because wharf numbers can differ between operators and change with works.

4. Tickets and timing

Transport for NSW says that to pay your fare you can use a credit or debit card, linked device or an Opal card, and that you need to tap on at the start of a trip and tap off at the end. Its general Opal page does not mention ferries, and we did not find a ferry-specific fare statement, so check the Transport for NSW ferry pages before you travel. We give no fares here. Do not assume that a private operator's fare, or a day pass, is accepted on the public lines or the reverse.

Sydney Ferries timetables are published by Transport for NSW and can change, and wharf works can alter services. The Parramatta River trip is listed at about 85 minutes each way, so it is not a short stop for a port day.

5. Accessibility, luggage and comfort

Transport for NSW's accessible ferry travel page says "All Sydney Ferries vessels are accessible to people using essential mobility aids" and that all ferries have toilets, including at least one wheelchair accessible toilet. It also says several older-style wharves have steps that prevent access, some wharves are not accessible when tides are low, and "Gangway and Ramp gradients are tide dependent". The crew help with the gangway, but the page says you need to be able to board independently or with the help of a friend or carer. It says its Trip Planner shows accessible services with the wheelchair symbol. Check the wharf at both ends, not only the vessel.

The Overseas Passenger Terminal page says to tell your cruise company in advance if you need wheelchair access. The same page says bags can generally be dropped off "from around 9am up until about 90 minutes before a ship is set to depart". The pages we read do not say whether the harbour ferries have luggage space, so travel light on a port day. The Manly Fast Ferry page does not mention accessibility or luggage; ask the operator.

6. Planning your return

Ferries run on their own timetables and none of the pages we read says what happens in bad weather, so ask the operator. Work backwards from your ship's all-aboard time, add the 450-metre walk from the ferry wharf to the terminal that Port Authority of NSW describes, and leave a margin. Our guides on why separate tickets need a buffer and the all-aboard worksheet show how, and the Sydney hub lists the sources for each route.

Checked on 30 October 2026: Transport for NSW's ferry, Opal and accessible-ferry pages, Port Authority of NSW's Overseas Passenger Terminal page, Destination NSW's Manly, Watsons Bay, Parramatta and cruise pages, Manly Fast Ferry's site and Taronga Zoo's getting-here page. Transport for NSW's timetable pages load by script, so no Sydney Ferries times were read, and Captain Cook Cruises' site refused our request, so nothing here describes it. No prices are given; check them on the operators' pages.
