If you arrive in Singapore a day before your ship, it is tempting to see the whole city in that day. Two areas give a full, unhurried day on their own: Gardens by the Bay at Marina Bay, and the Singapore River with its quays and museums. This guide compares them using the official pages, so you can choose one and keep the day easy.
1. Gardens or river: what each offers
| Gardens by the Bay | Singapore River | |
|---|---|---|
| The draw | Plants under glass and the Supertrees | History, old riverside warehouses and the skyline |
| Main stops | Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, Supertrees, OCBC Skyway | Asian Civilisations Museum, Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, a river cruise |
| Indoor and cool | Flower Dome, 23°C to 25°C | Museum galleries |
Visit Singapore describes the Flower Dome as covering 1.28 hectares with plants from five continents, the Cloud Forest as having "one of the world's tallest indoor waterfalls", and the OCBC Skyway as a walkway between two Supertrees. Its Singapore River page points to a river cruise to "learn about our city's rich history", restaurants in restored riverside warehouses, and the Asian Civilisations Museum, with its "salvaged cargo of a Tang dynasty shipwreck".
2. Choose the area by your hotel and your terminal
Start from where you sleep and where you sail. For the Gardens, the official opening-hours page describes a shuttle every 10 minutes looping between Bayfront Plaza (Exit B of Bayfront MRT), Active Garden and the Flower Dome, from 09:00 to 21:00, last ride 20:45. For the river, the Asian Civilisations Museum says it is a 5-minute walk from Raffles Place MRT (Exit H).
If your ship sails from Marina Bay Cruise Centre Singapore, the Singapore Tourism Board's release of 29 October 2025 on its upgrades lists a looped shuttle on select cruise days between Marina South Pier MRT station and the terminal, shuttles to Gardens by the Bay and Chinatown on select cruise days, early baggage drop-off, and a buggy service for passengers with reduced mobility. Ask your cruise line which of these run on your date.
3. Opening hours and admission
| Gardens by the Bay, as listed on 29 October 2026 | Hours | Ticket for visitors (non-residents) |
|---|---|---|
| Outdoor Gardens (includes Supertree Grove) | 05:00 to 02:00 | No admission price listed on the official pages |
| Garden Rhapsody show at Supertree Grove | 19:45 and 20:45 | Free admission; charges may apply during ticketed events such as Christmas Wonderland |
| Flower Dome | 09:00 to 21:00, last admission 20:30 | Combination tickets only: from SGD 46 (adult) and SGD 32 (child, 3 to 12) with the Cloud Forest |
| Cloud Forest | 09:00 to 21:00, last admission 20:00 | Combination tickets only, as for the Flower Dome |
| OCBC Skyway | 09:00 to 21:00, last admission 20:30 | SGD 14 (adult), SGD 10 (child, 3 to 12) |
For visitors who are not Singapore residents, the Flower Dome page lists combination tickets only; the lowest is the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest ticket at SGD 46 for adults and SGD 32 for children aged 3 to 12. The single Flower Dome ticket (SGD 12 for adults, SGD 8 for seniors aged 60 and over and for children) is a Singapore resident rate, and the page says proof of residency may be required. The Flower Dome and OCBC Skyway pages state their prices in Singapore dollars (SGD), including GST, as listed on 29 October 2026; check before you book. The conservatories close on set maintenance days; the dates listed include the Cloud Forest on 26 October and 17 November 2026 and the Flower Dome on 16 November 2026, with only one conservatory closed at a time. On the river, check the river cruise and the museum on their own pages for the current fare and admission.
4. Plan around heat and rain
Singapore's Meteorological Service gives typical daytime highs of about 31-33°C and night lows that do not fall below 23-25°C, with rain on an average of 171 days a year. In the inter-monsoon months of October and November it says "thunderstorms, at times severe, occur in the afternoon and early evening". Put outdoor walking early, and keep the indoor part for the afternoon.
Practical demands to plan for. Heat and humidity outdoors; walking between the Gardens shuttle stops or along the quays; and boarding a river boat at a jetty (the operator's pages do not describe boarding or access, so call it). Indoor pauses with seating are on record at the Asian Civilisations Museum: benches on all levels, foldable stools free to borrow, a manual wheelchair on loan first come first served, and lifts to all galleries. The museum is open 10:00 to 19:00 daily and to 21:00 on Fridays, with last admission 30 minutes before closing.
5. An evening show, and an early night
Garden Rhapsody, the light and sound show at Supertree Grove, is listed as daily at 19:45 and 20:45, but special editions replace it on some dates: the page lists a Christmas Special from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and earlier in 2026 a Spring Blossoms show and a Star Wars edition. Check the events calendar for your exact date. If you are boarding the next morning, the earlier show and the shuttle's last ride at 20:45 keep the evening short.
6. Two day outlines
- Gardens day: Flower Dome or Cloud Forest when it opens at 09:00, before the afternoon storms the Meteorological Service describes; a slow walk in the outdoor gardens; rest at the hotel through the hottest hours; back for the first Garden Rhapsody show if it runs on your date.
- River day: the Asian Civilisations Museum at 10:00; lunch by the river; the 40-minute river cruise ("The tale of 2 Quays") from one of the jetties the operator lists as open: Clarke Quay, Read Bridge, Bayfront South and Clifford Pier; an early dinner.
Choose your hotel as a separate decision, by its distance to the area you picked and to your terminal, and keep tours out of that booking. For the regional ferries to Batam and Bintan, see the Singapore ferries; for a port-day timing check, use the all-aboard worksheet.
