New Year Away: What It Costs and Where It Works

New Year travel is priced like nothing else in the calendar. Some destinations justify it and most are selling you a date rather than a place.

The nights of 30 December to 2 January are the most expensive block in the travel year, and the pricing comes with conditions attached that are unusual outside this window: minimum stays of three to five nights, non-refundable rates, and compulsory gala dinners charged whether or not you attend.

None of that is a scandal — it is fixed capacity meeting concentrated demand. But it does mean the decision deserves more thought than "where shall we go for New Year".

The three things that inflate the price

Where the premium buys something

Where it does not

Cities that are famous the other 361 days of the year — Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Prague — do not become better on 31 December. They become fuller, colder and considerably more expensive, and a large part of what you are paying for is standing in a crowd waiting for midnight.

If you love those cities, go in November or late January instead, when they are half the price and you can get a table.

The most reliable saving in the whole New Year calendar: travel on 31 December or on 1 January. Almost nobody wants to fly on either day, so those flights are among the cheapest of the period — and if you are going somewhere warm rather than somewhere with a famous midnight, the date you fly matters far more than the date you arrive.

The alternative worth considering

Skip it entirely and go in the second week of January. January and February are the two cheapest months to fly in the whole year, the weather in a winter-sun destination is identical to Christmas week, and the same money buys roughly twice as long away.

The trade is that you are at home for the holidays, which for many people is the point rather than the cost. If that is not your situation, the second week of January is where the value is.
