January and February are the cheapest months to fly in the calendar. Once the holiday rush clears in the first week of January, demand collapses across almost every market and stays down until Easter.
That produces three genuinely different kinds of trip, and it is worth choosing between them deliberately rather than defaulting to "somewhere warm".
Option one: reliable warmth
- The Canary Islands — around twenty degrees, four to five hours from northern Europe, and identical weather to Christmas week at a fraction of the price. The single best value in European winter travel. Which island.
- Egypt — the ideal months for Luxor and Aswan. Warm days, cool nights, and the temple sites are bearable rather than punishing. A Nile cruise.
- The Caribbean — dry season, though January and February are high season here and priced accordingly. The value window was late November.
- Thailand and Vietnam — cool dry season and the best time of year to be there. Long-haul, but the fares are at their annual floor.
- Oman — winter is its season, and it is a considerably more interesting country than the Gulf's marketing suggests.
Option two: empty cities
This is the underrated one. Europe's great cities in January and February are at their emptiest and cheapest, and the things people actually go for — museums, churches, restaurants, architecture — are indoors.
- Rome, Florence, Madrid, Seville, Vienna, Budapest, Lisbon. Every major museum bookable at short notice. Restaurants that will not answer the phone in June take a reservation for tomorrow.
- The Alhambra in February — Nasrid Palace slots that are gone months ahead in summer are available. Andalusia in a week.
- Venice — genuinely quiet, frequently misty, and at its most beautiful. Carnival in February is the exception and reverses everything, so check the dates.
- Japan — cold, clear, very few foreign visitors, and the cheapest time of year to go. Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto.
The one thing to check before booking a winter city break: seasonal closures. Not hotels — specific sights. Mountain cable cars, smaller museums, some archaeological sites and many island ferries run winter timetables or shut entirely. It is published, it takes five minutes, and it is the only thing that can hollow out an otherwise excellent trip.
Option three: winter as the point
- Northern lights. January and February have the longest darkness of the aurora season. Inland Lapland and the Yukon are far colder and far clearer than coastal Tromsø or Iceland — the trade is −25°C with stars against −5°C with cloud. The full picture.
- Lapland and the Arctic — husky sledding, snow hotels, reindeer, and a landscape that only exists now.
- The Alps — January is the cheapest reliable snow of the season, between the New Year peak and the February half-terms.
The dates to avoid
- The first week of January, while holiday pricing unwinds. Wait until about the 8th.
- February half-term, which falls in different weeks in different countries and puts peak pricing into an otherwise cheap month. Check the school calendar of the country that supplies most of the visitors, not your own.
- Chinese New Year, which affects prices and availability across much of Asia and increasingly elsewhere.
- Venice Carnival, if you wanted the quiet Venice.
And one thing to do rather than book
January is wave season — the cruise industry's promotional period, when the whole industry competes at once for bookings months and years ahead. If a big trip is in your plans for later in the year, January is when to buy it, not when to take it.

- The two cheapest months to fly. The saving is larger than any promotion you will find.
- Canaries and Egypt for warmth; European cities for emptiness; Lapland for the aurora.
