Easter is the only major holiday in the European calendar that moves, and it moves a long way — anywhere from 22 March to 25 April. Everything that clusters around it moves too: school holidays, flight pricing, hotel minimum stays, the opening dates of seasonal businesses.
In 2027 it is early. Good Friday 26 March, Easter Sunday 28 March, Easter Monday 29 March.
What an early Easter does
- Peak pricing lands in March. School holidays across Europe cluster around the date — one published European school calendar runs 22 March to 2 April 2027. Flights and accommodation in that window will price like high season in a month that is otherwise cheap.
- The weather has not caught up. Late March is not April. Nights are cold across southern Europe, mountain passes may still be shut, and rain is likelier.
- The sea is at its coldest. Mediterranean water lags the air by roughly two months, so it bottoms out in March and April. An early Easter beach holiday is a beach holiday without swimming.
- Seasonal businesses may not have opened. Greek island ferries, smaller hotels, mountain cable cars and some coastal restaurants time their opening to Easter in a normal year — in an early-Easter year, some simply are not ready.
The opportunity: late April 2027
This is the part worth acting on. With the holiday out of the way by 29 March, the second half of April 2027 becomes an unusually good fortnight in southern Europe:
- Post-holiday pricing, with no school break to lift it.
- Better weather than the holiday itself had — April in the Mediterranean is warm, green and flowering.
- Seasonal businesses now genuinely open, having missed the early Easter.
- No competing demand until the May bank holidays.
In most years late April is already good. In 2027 it should be exceptional, and it is the single most useful thing to know about the coming spring.
If you want the sea, wait longer still. The Mediterranean is at its warmest in September, not July, and at its coldest in March and April. If swimming is the point of the trip, spring is the wrong half of the year regardless of where Easter falls — go in the autumn shoulder instead. Region by region.
Where an early Easter is actively good
- Andalusia. Semana Santa in Seville is among the great religious processions in Europe and an early Easter puts it in a month with better walking weather than a late one. It also makes the city extremely full and expensive — go deliberately or avoid deliberately. Andalusia in a week.
- City breaks generally. Cold sea does not matter in Rome, Vienna or Lisbon.
- North Africa. Morocco and Egypt are at their best in March and April, before the heat. Morocco.
- Japan. Cherry blossom in Kyoto and Tokyo typically falls in late March and early April — an early Easter overlaps it, which is either the reason to go or the reason to avoid it, depending on your tolerance for crowds.
How to plan around it
- If your dates are fixed by school holidays, book early and choose a destination where cold water does not matter — a city, or North Africa.
- If your dates are free, take late April. It is the best value in the 2027 spring.
- Check opening dates, not just weather averages, for anything seasonal — island ferries especially.
- Check the specific school calendar of the country supplying most visitors to your destination, not your own.
- Do not book a swimming holiday for March. The sea does not care what the calendar says.
The short version
- Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027. Good Friday the 26th, Easter Monday the 29th.
- Peak pricing moves into March; the weather does not move with it.
- The Mediterranean sea is at its coldest in March and April.
- The second half of April 2027 should be the best-value fortnight of the spring.
- Good early-Easter destinations: cities, Andalusia, Morocco, Egypt, Japan for the blossom.
- Check that seasonal businesses have actually opened before relying on them.
