Morocco is a three-hour flight from much of Europe and feels a great deal further, which is its appeal. It is also larger than most first-time visitors expect: Marrakech to the Sahara dunes is eight to ten hours of driving each way over a high mountain pass, and that fact quietly determines most itineraries.
The four experiences
- Marrakech — the medina, the Jemaa el-Fnaa square, the souks, the riads. Intense, commercial, and the easiest to reach. Two or three days is right; longer and the hustle wears.
- Fes — the older and more serious city. Its medina is one of the largest car-free urban areas in the world and is genuinely disorienting in a way Marrakech is not. The better city for anyone interested in craft, scholarship and architecture rather than shopping.
- The Atlas mountains — Berber villages, terraced valleys, walking, and a marked drop in temperature. The Ourika and Imlil valleys are within reach of Marrakech for a day or an overnight.
- The desert — the Erg Chebbi dunes near Merzouga or Erg Chigaga near Zagora. This is the eight-to-ten-hour drive.
How to structure a week
Pick two, not four.
- Marrakech + Atlas — the best short trip. City and mountains, short transfers, no long driving days.
- Fes + Marrakech — two cities, connected by a comfortable train of about seven hours, or a short flight. A good introduction to the country's range.
- Marrakech + desert — only if you accept that two of your days are driving. Three days minimum for the desert leg; two is a bus tour with a night in it.
- Coast — Essaouira, three hours from Marrakech, windy, Atlantic, fortified and much more relaxed. An excellent decompression stop after the medina.
On the desert trip. The standard two-night version from Marrakech is roughly: a full day driving over the Tizi n'Tichka pass with stops, a night in the Dades or Todra gorge, more driving, then camels at sunset and a night in a desert camp. The dunes are worth it. The driving is genuinely long, on winding mountain roads, and anyone prone to car sickness should know that before booking.
Riads
A riad is a traditional house built inward around a courtyard, and staying in one is the single best accommodation decision in Morocco. They are quiet in a way that is astonishing given what is happening outside the door, usually small — six to ten rooms — and breakfast on the roof terrace is the best part of the day.
The practical catch: riads are inside the medina, which is car-free. Your taxi stops at the nearest gate and someone comes to meet you, often with a barrow for the luggage. Arrange this in advance; arriving unannounced at a medina gate after dark with suitcases is the classic bad first evening.
Practical points
- Bargaining is expected in the souks and is a social process rather than a confrontation. Decide your price, stay friendly, and be willing to walk away. If you would be happy at the price, pay it and stop optimising.
- Unofficial guides approach constantly in Marrakech and Fes. A firm, polite, repeated "no thank you" works. Hiring an official guide for a first half-day in Fes, on the other hand, is money well spent — the medina is genuinely a maze.
- Dress modestly, particularly outside the tourist centres. Shoulders and knees covered, for everyone.
- Alcohol is available in hotels, licensed restaurants and some shops, but is not generally sold in the medina.
- Friday is the main prayer day; some businesses close around midday.
- Ramadan changes opening hours, restaurant availability and the rhythm of the day. It is a fascinating time to visit and it is not a normal one — check the dates before booking.
When to go
March to May and September to November. Summer inland is severe — Marrakech regularly exceeds 40°C and the desert is worse. Winter is pleasant in the south by day and genuinely cold at night, particularly in the desert and the mountains, where snow closes passes.
The short version
- Pick two experiences for a week. Marrakech plus the Atlas is the strongest short trip.
- The desert is eight to ten hours of driving each way. Give it three days or leave it.
- Fes for craft and architecture, Marrakech for energy and shopping, Essaouira to recover.
- Stay in a riad, and arrange the medina-gate meeting in advance.
- Hire an official guide for a first half-day in Fes.
- Spring and autumn. Not summer inland.
