Cairns Ferry Guide: Green Island, Fitzroy Island and the Outer Reef

Two island crossings and a full-day reef trip leave from the same waterfront. They are not the same kind of day, and the ship does not wait.

Ports North, the Queensland Government-owned port company, says Cairns has a dedicated cruise terminal on Wharf 2/3 "in the heart of the City", and that the airport is "just a 10-minute drive away". The boats to the reef leave from the same waterfront, which is why a port call here invites a day on the water. Our Cairns ferry page lists the individual boats; this guide explains how to choose between them and how to keep your timing safe.

1. Three different kinds of day

The two island crossings are short. Fitzroy Island Resort says a Fitzroy Flyer ride takes about 45 minutes from Cairns. Great Adventures says the transfer to Green Island is "approximately 45 minutes subject to weather conditions". Big Cat Green Island Reef Cruises says Green Island is "only 45 minutes from Cairns". The third kind is a full-day reef tour: Great Adventures' combined itinerary visits Green Island and then a platform on the Outer Reef.

These are the pages of tour and resort businesses selling their own trips, not of a public ferry authority. Each page describes its own product, and none of them speaks for the others.

2. Getting to the jetty

Ports North describes the cruise terminal as "an easy walk to downtown shopping". It does not give a walking distance or time to the reef jetties, so check the distance on a map and ask your ship's shore-excursion desk rather than assuming it is short for you.

Two places matter, and they are easy to mix up. Great Adventures tells guests to check in at its counter inside the Reef Fleet Terminal. Big Cat says guests can check in directly at its vessels, Big Cat and Reef Rocket, at Marlin Wharf, and lists the Reef Fleet Terminal at 1 Spence Street as its office. Fitzroy Island Resort says its ferry is at "Berth 20 on the Marlin Marina Wharf" and that "The Reef Fleet Terminal/Cairns Marlin Wharf is located at 1 Spence Street". Your booking says where to report; check it before you leave the ship.

If you are flying in to join a ship, Cairns Airport's transport page says there are "many transport options", and that private shuttle bus operators also serve the airport and are booked directly with each operator. Planning your flights? See our flights page.

3. What the operators say about times

TripWhat the operator's page said on 29 October 2026
Great Adventures, Green Island and Outer ReefDeparts Cairns 8:30am, arrives Green Island 9:15am, leaves Green Island 11:20am, arrives at the Outer Reef 12:30pm, leaves the reef 3:30pm, back in Cairns 5:30pm. Boarding is 30 minutes before departure.
Big Cat, Green IslandTours operate daily; the full-day tour gives up to 5.5 hours on the island and a half-day option exists. The page gives no departure times; the office is open 7 days, 7am to 6pm.
Fitzroy Flyer, Fitzroy IslandFour departures from Cairns (8:00am, 11:00am, 3:30pm, 6:00pm) in a timetable the page headlines "from December 7"; the page says some services do not run on every day (for example in low season, and the 6pm only occasionally on Fridays and Saturdays). Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.

Notice what a day like the Great Adventures one implies: the boat is back at 5:30pm. Whether that fits your ship depends on your all-aboard time, which this guide cannot know. Ask the operator what happens if the boat is late, and ask the ship what it does.

4. Tickets, season and what to check

When we read it, Fitzroy Island Resort's page said that the Fitzroy Flyer "is currently out for maintenance until Tuesday 24th November" and that the resort was coordinating with Sunlover Reef Cruises and Fitzroy Island Adventures. It adds that its special rates and promo codes do not apply with those operators. The page also says schedules and prices may change, and it is not fully consistent: the main text and the footnote give a different time for one low-season service (12:15pm and 12:30pm). For Fitzroy Island, today is not a day to rely on the published timetable. Read the operator's page again close to your date.

Great Adventures' page lists an adult fare of AUD 343 for its Green Island and Outer Reef trip, and says prices are valid from 1 April 2026 to 31 March 2027. It also says "All schedules, activities and prices may be varied without notice." That is the figure on 29 October 2026; check before you book.

Two practical points. Great Adventures says boarding passes are collected at its counter, so allow time for check-in as well as the boat. And if your ship sells the trip, ask whether it is a ship excursion or your own booking, because that decides who is responsible if you return late. Our guide to separate tickets and the buffer explains the margin.

5. Access, luggage and comfort: what the pages say and what they do not

Big Cat is the only one of these operators whose page we read that sets out access details. It says "Passengers must have some mobility and/or the presence of a carer who can assist them"; that Big Cat has a chair lift between vessel levels; that toilets on the vessel are not wheelchair accessible while the island has disabled toilets; that electric wheelchairs cannot be accommodated on any vessel or coach; and that boarding and disembarking may happen at different levels depending on the tide. It asks guests to mention wheelchair users at booking.

The Fitzroy Island page gives no luggage, accessibility or wheelchair information. The Great Adventures page gives no accessibility or luggage policy either; it links to a separate information page for non-swimmers that we did not read. If you use a stick, a walker or a wheelchair, or if steps and gangways concern you, ask each operator before you pay. Great Adventures lists swimwear and a towel, comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen to bring, recommends marine-friendly sunscreen, and says drones are not permitted.

6. Weather and the return to the ship

Great Adventures says transfers are "subject to weather conditions" and that some activities may not be available due to time constraints. Big Cat says coral viewing and glass-bottom-boat activities are subject to the weather. None of the pages we read says what happens to a cruise guest if a boat is cancelled, so ask before booking. If your all-aboard time is early, the shorter island option leaves more margin than a full reef day; the full reef day suits a long stay.

We could not open the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority's website today, so this guide says nothing about reef-park fees or rules. Ask your operator what is included in the fare, and see the Cairns ferry page for the boats.

Checked on 29 October 2026: the Fitzroy Island getting-here page, the Great Adventures Green Island and Outer Reef page, the Big Cat Green Island page, the Ports North cruise-shipping and About pages and the Cairns Airport transport-options page. Fares and timetables are those the pages showed that day and can change; check before you book. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority site could not be opened.
