A summer trip is not one purchase with one optimal moment. It is three or four purchases with different clocks, and the mistake most people make is treating them as a single decision made on a single day.
The booking order

The principle: book in order of scarcity, not in order of cost. The Alhambra ticket is cheap and unobtainable late; the Rome hotel is expensive and always available. People routinely book them in the wrong order.
The flight-timing question, resolved
Two 2026 studies flatly contradict each other. One finds the cheapest international window is 8 to 15 days out; another says three to five months, extending to five to seven for Asia and Oceania.
Both are correct measurements of different things. A study of the average fare paid at each booking distance finds late bookings look cheap, because late bookings are dominated by flexible travellers on routes with unsold seats. It does not mean your flight on your date will be cheap late.
The resolution: fixed dates mean early booking; flexible dates mean waiting can pay. A summer trip almost always has fixed dates. Book early. The full explanation.
Never wait on a thin or seasonal route. Four flights a week to a summer destination will not discount as the date approaches. They will sell out, and what remains will be expensive. Waiting only works where there is competition and daily frequency.
What to decide before January
Wave season starts on 1 January and rewards preparation rather than vigilance. Have these settled before it does:
- Region and month. These determine most of the cost and all of the experience.
- Your all-in budget — fare plus gratuities, drinks, excursions and flights, not the fare alone.
- Whether your dates can move at all. Flexibility is worth more than any promotion.
- Two or three specific options priced now, in autumn, so you have your own reference number when the offers start.
- Whether you are buying mainstream, premium, luxury or river. Four different businesses.
Summer 2027 specifics
- Easter is early — 28 March 2027 — so spring school holidays land in March and late April becomes unusually good value. That is a separate trip worth considering instead of, or as well as, a summer one.
- ETIAS may launch during 2027. No date is confirmed. Check three months before travel; do not buy one now. What changes in 2027.
- Alaska's sweet spot is 20 May to 10 June — driest weather, active wildlife, below-peak prices. It books early.
- The Mediterranean's best weeks are mid-September to mid-October, not July. Warm sea, thin crowds, off-peak prices. If "summer" is negotiable, this is the better trip.
The mistake worth naming
Waiting for a better offer on a specific sailing or a specific week. Promotions rotate through wave season rather than improving, and while you wait the cabin, the date and the good hotel are being sold to someone else.
Decide the trip, then take the best available offer on it within a couple of weeks. The perfect week does not exist and looking for it costs more than it saves.
