Milford Sound can be reached by small aircraft from Queenstown, usually as a half-day fly, cruise and fly trip, or as a one-way flight back. Several operators run them, and each states different details. This guide sets out what each operator's own page says, marks what it does not say, and ends with the questions to ask and the alternatives.

Flights we found, as the sources describe them

Fly | Cruise | Fly

Type: small plane · Operator: RealNZ, with Milford Sound Scenic Flights

What it covers: Return flights between Queenstown and Milford Sound, a cruise on the sound, hotel pick-up and drop-off in Queenstown, and a shuttle from the Milford Sound airport to the cruise terminal.

Time in the air, as the source states: About 45 minutes each way by air; a cruise of 1.5 to 2 hours; the page lists the whole trip as 4 to 5 hours and suggests allowing 5 hours.

Departs from: Queenstown; daily departures at 10am and 12.15pm are listed.

When and weather: The page says all flights are weather dependent, asks guests to call about 1 hour 15 minutes before departure for a weather check, and says that if flights cannot operate RealNZ offers the next suitable trip or a full refund if you cannot reschedule. The page does not promise wildlife sightings on the cruise.

The page says the package includes a window seat on the flight, and that changes or refunds on direct bookings need up to 24 hours’ notice before departure.

Fly | Cruise | Fly

Type: small plane · Operator: Glenorchy Air, with a Southern Discoveries cruise

What it covers: A half-day trip combining flights between Queenstown and Milford Sound with a nature cruise.

Time in the air, as the source states: About 40 minutes each way by air and a cruise of 1 hour 45 minutes; the whole half-day trip, from check-in 30 minutes before departure to landing back, takes about 5 to 5½ hours.

Departs from: Queenstown; suggested departures are 9.00am or 1.30pm, the 1.30pm departure only at certain times of year.

When and weather: The page says pilots check the forecast for the full trip and will not leave Queenstown if the weather may change; if the return flight cannot operate the company arranges coach transfers back to Queenstown.

The page states a 15 kg luggage restriction.

One-way flight, Milford Sound to Queenstown

Type: small plane · Operator: Glenorchy Air

What it covers: A one-way flight from Milford Sound back to Queenstown, for example after walking or cruising.

Time in the air, as the source states: About 40 minutes.

Departs from: Milford Sound; the main listing gives 10.00am, 2.30pm and 3.30pm, and the FAQ gives the third as 3.00pm, so the page conflicts.

When and weather: Flights are weather dependent; the page says that if the weather is adverse you must have booked a backup return transport option to or from Milford Sound.

Fly | Nature Cruise | Fly

Type: small plane · Operator: Air Milford

What it covers: A half-day journey combining scenic flights and a Milford Sound cruise, flying from Queenstown over the Southern Alps into Fiordland.

Time in the air, as the source states: The flight back from Milford takes approximately 35 minutes, according to the operator’s FAQ.

Departs from: Queenstown Airport.

When and weather: The FAQ says weather can change flight times, asks guests to call on arrival in Queenstown and again 1.5 hours before departure, and says that if all flights are grounded the booking is cancelled with no charge.

The FAQ says the 12-seater aircraft has a 1-2 seat layout, so three of the twelve seats are in the middle, and that Air Milford does not promise window seats.

Practical demands

Weight and baggage limits
Glenorchy Air states a 15 kg luggage restriction and says infants must weigh under 15 kg. Air Milford’s FAQ does not cover luggage or weight limits, and RealNZ’s page does not state them: ask each operator.
Seating and windows
RealNZ says its package includes a window seat. Air Milford says its 12-seater aircraft has a 1-2 layout and does not promise window seats. Glenorchy Air’s page does not say.
Boarding, steps and waiting
Not stated by the sources we read: ask the operator. Glenorchy Air asks for check-in 30 minutes before departure.
Motion, noise and ears
Not stated by the sources we read: ask the operator.
Weather and cancellation
Every operator says flights are weather dependent and that the plan can change on the day; the refund or rebooking terms differ by operator, as the flight cards say. Read the terms before you book.
Age limits and children
Air Milford lists child passengers as aged 2 to 12 and infants aged 0 to 1 flying on an adult’s lap with a safety restraint, and does not state a minimum age for adults. The other pages do not state age limits.
Mobility needs
Air Milford’s FAQ does not cover mobility assistance. We found nothing on this from the other operators: ask before you book.

Where a row says it is not stated, we did not find it in the sources we read. That is not the same as “easy” or “not needed”: ask the operator.

Questions to ask before you book

  1. Which aviation authority licenses the operator, and can they show you their current operating certificate?
  2. Which aircraft will you fly in, how many seats does it have, and is there a window seat for every passenger?
  3. How are weight and baggage limits applied, and are passengers weighed or asked to declare weight?
  4. Who decides to cancel for weather, how late can they decide, and what does the booking terms say you get back?
  5. How many steps or how much stooping is there to board, how long is the wait on the ground, and where are the toilets?
  6. How loud is the cabin, do passengers wear headsets, and what is the plan if you feel unwell in the air?
  7. What exactly does the flight cover, how long is the time in the air as against the time on the ground, and what is not included?
  8. If the weather grounds the return flight, how do you get back to Queenstown, how long does that take, and who pays for it?
  9. Is a window seat part of the booking, or is the seat allocated on the day?
