New England and Canada: peak foliage
Early-to-mid October is peak color from Maine to Quebec: maples at full red, harvest festivals, 10–18°C. Ten-night fares run $1,000–1,800 and sell out early. The fall foliage route is the benchmark; foliage timing tells you which week to book.
Mediterranean: the quiet finale
October keeps 19–25°C in Greece, Croatia and southern Spain, with crowds gone and fares down to $800–1,400 for seven nights. Rain chances rise late month; sail early. The Greek Isles route runs into late October, and the Dalmatian coast is lovely in the low light.
Transatlantic repositioning: rock bottom
The westbound crossings peak in October: 12–16 nights at $550–1,000 — the cheapest sea days of the year. Hurricane season officially runs through November 30 (NOAA) — October's crossings are still inside it, which is part of the price; flexible flights matter more than the cabin category.
