Alaska: the late-season bargain window
Early August still delivers 12–19°C days and active wildlife; by late month rain increases, but fares fall to $900–1,500 for seven nights — and the season's first aurora is possible on northbound nights. Alaska: May, July or September weighs the trade-offs; the Inside Passage route sails through early September.
Baltic capitals: late-summer ease
Stockholm, Helsinki, Tallinn and Copenhagen hold 16–22°C with long evenings and thinning crowds after mid-August. Eleven-night fares run $1,200–2,000. The Baltic capitals route remains one of the month's easiest bookings.
Norwegian fjords: calmest seas of the year

Iceland and Greenland: final Arctic weeks
The short Arctic season closes in late August: puffins depart mid-month, but whales peak and Greenland's ice fjords stay accessible at 7–13°C. Twelve-day voyages run $2,400–4,200, dipping below July. The fire-and-ice route is the benchmark.
Mediterranean and Caribbean: honest warnings
The Mediterranean hits 28–34°C with peak crowds and fares of $1,200–2,000; if you must sail, choose late August when Europeans head home. The Caribbean is hot and storm-prone at $550–850 — NOAA puts the season's statistical peak at September 10, with most activity between mid-August and mid-October — so it is good value only with flexible insurance; the Eastern Caribbean route keeps flights simple.
