Cruise prices do not simply rise as sailing day approaches. They move in three distinct windows, and each rewards a different kind of traveller. The cheapest booking and the safest booking are not always the same one.
Window 1: 9-15 months out — best cabin, not lowest fare
Launch fares reward planners with the full cabin inventory and a refundable deposit. The price may fall later, but before final payment most lines will re-price the booking on request — so early booking with a refundable fare is the low-risk strategy for families, accessible cabins, connecting cabins and anyone tied to school holidays.
Window 2: January-March — wave season
Wave season is the industry's annual sale. The headline fare often changes less than the package around it: reduced deposits, onboard credit, drinks or wifi bundled, children sailing cheap. Compare the final package, not the discount percentage. The current framework is in wave season 2027.
Window 3: 60-90 days out — the real clearance
Final payment passes and unpaid cabins return to inventory. Most mainstream lines set final payment 75–120 days before sailing — Carnival's own schedule starts at 76 days — which is why this clearance window opens around the 60–90-day mark. Some fares hedge it in both directions: Carnival's Early Saver builds in price protection if its own fare drops after you book. This is when lines cut fares to fill the last rooms, especially on shoulder-season and repositioning sailings. Discounts of 20–40% can appear — but flights are now expensive, cabin choice is poor, and saver fares are non-refundable. This window is for flexible couples and solo travellers within driving distance of the port, not families needing four air seats.
The months that price lowest
Early May, September after schools reopen, early November and the first two weeks of December consistently undercut peak dates. The ship is the same; weather and holiday calendars are doing the discount. Alaska prices lowest in May and September, the Mediterranean in April-May and October, Caribbean in September-early December.
How to track and re-price
Book refundable, then check the exact ship/date/cabin in our fare database every two or three weeks. If the price drops before final payment, call the line or agent and ask to re-fare. You may lose the original onboard-credit promotion, so compare the total value before accepting. Lines do not notify you; tracking is your job.
The five-minute version
- 9-15 months: best cabin and refundable flexibility; re-price later.
- January-March: wave season adds perks more often than cutting fare.
- 60-90 days: real clearance after final payment, but poor cabins and costly flights.
- Cheapest months: early May, September, early November, early December.
- Track the exact sailing; compare lost perks before accepting a lower fare.
