The Douro is the shortest major river cruise in Europe - most sailings are seven nights round trip from Porto - and the widest priced. The same week on the same river costs $1,100 per person with a French budget operator and $7,000 with a luxury one. Here is what separates those numbers, at 2026 prices, and what a fair price actually looks like.

What is included - and what is not
Inclusions vary line by line on this river, so read the list before comparing two fares. Included nearly everywhere: full board and one guided excursion per stop - the Salamanca day across the Spanish border is the long one. Wine or beer with meals is standard above the budget tier. Port charges are not always inside the fare: Uniworld bundles €240 per person into its price, others itemize. Budget fares put drinks, gratuities and some excursions on top. Flights
Porto round trip from the US runs roughly $650–1,200, usually with one connection - nonstops are rare. Lisbon, three hours away by train, is often the cheaper gateway, which is one reason the ten-day packages that begin there can be better value than they first look. Whichever airport you choose, arrive a day early: the boats sail upriver the same evening, and a missed embarkation here is harder to fix than at a big ocean port.
Tips
Where gratuities are not included, the convention on European rivers is €10–15 per person per day - call it €70–105 for the week, per person. A-ROSA's premium fare, Uniworld, Scenic and Tauck fold tips into the price; Viking and AmaWaterways list them as extra. Two fares $400 apart can be the same fare once tips are counted.
The cost nobody tells you about
Drinks. On the lines that do not include them, wine at dinner runs €5–9 a glass and the week quietly adds €150–250 per person - which can erase the whole gap between a budget fare and an all-inclusive one. The second quiet line is Porto itself: the cruise fare assumes you get yourself to the pier, and a couple of hotel nights before or after - well worth having, in the most charming city on the itinerary - adds $100–200 a night.
