Croatia's Dalmatian Coast is one of the few cruise regions where the small ship is not the luxury option — it is the standard one. The classic week is a 38-cabin vessel island-hopping between Split and Dubrovnik, swimming off the stern every afternoon. Big ships do Dubrovnik too, but as a single crowded port call inside a longer Mediterranean itinerary. The two products price completely differently. Here is the 2026 picture.
The small-ship week, priced
The seven-day Split–Dubrovnik (or reverse) sailings are the heart of the market. Tracked 2026 fares (recent example): a Katarina Line departure priced €920 per person in late April, €1,150 a week later, lower-deck cabin, two sharing. Across the season, expect:
- April–May and October: €900–1,300 per person on the standard vessels.
- June and September: €1,300–1,700.
- July–August: €1,700–2,500 on the same boats, more on the newer deluxe ships with balconies and jacuzzis.
These are half-board fares — breakfast and lunch aboard, dinner ashore — which is the important number below. Deluxe and "superior" categories run 30–60% above standard for the same route; what you are buying is a newer hull and bigger cabins, not a different coast.
The big-ship alternative
Mainstream lines sell Dubrovnik and Split as port calls on seven-to-twelve-night Adriatic and Mediterranean itineraries, typically from Venice (Trieste), Ravenna or Athens. Interiors on those run $1,000–1,800 per person for the week in 2026 — more sailing for the money, but Dubrovnik becomes a six-hour stop shared with up to four other ships, and the islands in between are gone entirely. If the coast is the point, the small ship is the product.
Flights
Split and Dubrovnik both have airports; from the US it is one stop via a European hub, typically $700–1,100 round trip in season. Open-jaw — into Split, out of Dubrovnik, or the reverse — usually costs the same as a round trip and saves the return transfer, since the cruise ends at the opposite end of the coast. Add a hotel night at embarkation: $80–150 a room in Split, more in Dubrovnik's old-town orbit.
Tips
Small-ship crews work on pooled tips: €5–10 per person per day is the expected band, call it €35–70 for the week. On the mainstream ocean lines it is the standard $16–18.50 per person per day.
Excursions and dinners: the real budget
On the small ships the sailing days are the excursion — swim stops, island towns a short walk from the gangway, the skipper's local knowledge. Organized tours exist (Mljet national park entry about €25, the Dubrovnik city walls about €35) but most days cost nothing beyond coffee and ice cream. The real daily spend is dinner ashore, because half-board means you eat in whichever old town you are moored in: figure €25–45 per person for a konoba dinner with local wine, seven nights of it — €175–315 each. Add drinks aboard, which are paid on a tab: Croatian wine at €4–7 a glass, coffee included with breakfast.
On the big ships, the math inverts: meals are included, but the shore time is so compressed that the excursion desk becomes the budget line — Dubrovnik's walls-and-cable-car day books at $120–180 through the ship, versus about €60 doing it yourself off the gangway. The cost nobody tells you about
The half-board gap. The €920 April fare looks like full board and it is not — seven dinners ashore, drinks and tips add €250–400 per person to any small-ship quote before you have bought a single tour. Budget it and the fare stays a bargain; miss it and the "cheap" week costs a third more than planned.
Second: one-way flights. Because the small ships run Split–Dubrovnik one-way, the round-trip flight habit costs you a half-day backtracking bus ride — price the open-jaw from the start.
The all-in picture
Per person for the seven-day small-ship week, flights from the US included:
- Careful budget: about $2,000–2,500 — April or October standard cabin, open-jaw fare, konoba dinners.
- Comfortable mid-range: $3,200–4,200 — June or September upper-deck cabin, a tour or two, dinners wherever looks good.
- Deluxe small ship in peak summer: $4,500–6,000 and up.
