Victoria is Alaska cruising's gentle finale - an English-style garden city that is also the usual last call before Seattle or Vancouver. Ships dock at Ogden Point, about a mile and a half from the Inner Harbour. The one decision that shapes the day is Butchart Gardens: worth it, but plan the transport. See Victoria's place page and the Inside Passage route.
Getting ashore
The Ogden Point cruise terminal sits 1.5 miles from downtown: a flat 25-30 minute waterfront walk, a shuttle for about CA$10-15 round trip, or a short taxi. Many Victoria calls are evening stops (4-10pm), which changes the plan - downtown first, gardens only if open late in summer.
What to do in 6-10 hours
Butchart Gardens is the anchor: 55 acres of themed gardens 30 minutes from the terminal, admission around CA$40 for adults, with shuttle packages from the dock around CA$45-60 including transport and entry. In the Inner Harbour: the Royal BC Museum, the Parliament buildings, and afternoon tea at the Fairmont Empress (around CA$95 - book ahead). Fisherman's Wharf adds floating houses and harbor seals, a 20-minute walk from the terminal. Whale watching runs from the harbour at CA$130-180.
Walking level
The Ogden Point-to-harbour walk is flat and scenic. Downtown is flat and compact. Butchart involves gentle garden paths with some steps and slopes - 1-2 miles at an easy pace. One of the easiest port days on the entire itinerary.
Excursion or independent
Independent works well: the Butchart shuttle from the terminal and the walkable harbour cover everything a packaged tour does, at CA$30-50 less per person. Book the ship's version only on short evening calls, where the guaranteed return matters more than the savings. The full trade-off is in ship excursion or independent.
What it costs
Harbour walk, Parliament exterior and Fisherman's Wharf: free. Butchart admission about CA$40, shuttle CA$10-15. Empress tea around CA$95. Whale watching CA$130-180. A comfortable independent day runs CA$60-120 per person; add tea or whales for CA$200-300.
