Sitka is Alaska's most cultured port - Tlingit heritage and Russian-era history in a town ringed by volcanoes and sea - and one of the easiest to do independently. Most large ships dock at the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal about six miles from town, with a free shuttle; some smaller ships dock downtown. See Sitka's place page and the Inside Passage route.
Getting ashore
From the cruise terminal, free shuttles run every 10-15 minutes and drop you downtown at Harrigan Centennial Hall, a ten-minute ride. If your ship berths downtown, everything below starts at the gangway. No tenders.
What to do in 6-10 hours
Start with Sitka National Historical Park: the Totem Trail is a flat one-mile loop through rainforest lined with totem poles, free, ten minutes' walk from the shuttle stop. Downtown adds St. Michael's Cathedral, the Russian Bishop's House ($10), and harbor-side seafood lunches ($25-40). The two wildlife anchors are Fortress of the Bear (rescued brown bears, $15-18, three miles out - taxi or combo shuttle) and the Alaska Raptor Center (rehabilitated eagles, $15-18, a 15-minute walk through the park). Both fit one day with time to spare.
Walking level
The Totem Trail and downtown are flat and gentle - Sitka's core sights need no more than 2-3 easy miles. The Raptor Center path is packed gravel with a mild grade. Fortress of the Bear involves short flat viewing areas. One of Alaska's most manageable ports, with rain the main wildcard.
Excursion or independent
Sitka is the strongest independent port in Alaska: shuttle, trail, cathedral and both wildlife centers are all reachable without any tour, saving $40-80 per person against packaged versions. Ship excursions earn their premium only for sea otter/wildlife boat tours ($150-250) and salmon fishing, which need operators. The full trade-off is in ship excursion or independent.
