San Juan is the Caribbean's best walking port: the piers sit at the foot of Old San Juan, a walled Spanish-colonial district of blue cobblestones, forts and cafes. Getting ashore
Most ships dock at the Old San Juan piers - you step off into the old city. Some large ships use the Pan American Pier across the bay, a 10-minute taxi or shuttle ride. No tenders. Old San Juan itself is compact: everything inside the walls is within a mile.
What to do in 6-10 hours
The forts are the anchor: El Morro and San Cristobal are separate entrances around $10 each, connected by the city walls and views. Between them, Calle Fortaleza, the cathedral, Paseo de la Princesa and the cafe scene fill the day. A free trolley loops the district and helps with the hills. Beyond the old city: the Bacardi distillery across the bay (ferry plus tour, $20-50) or El Yunque rainforest tours ($65-100) if you have a long call.
Walking level
Old San Juan is the honest challenge of this series: the famous blue adoquines are uneven, and the streets rise toward the forts. The free trolley solves most of it; wheelchairs manage the lower grid and Paseo de la Princesa but not the upper climbs. Comfortable shoes are essential; heat plus cobblestones punish sandals.
Excursion or independent
Fully independent: the old city needs no tour, the forts are walk-up, and the trolley is free. Ship excursions only make sense for El Yunque and Bacardi, where transport coordination matters. The full trade-off is in ship excursion or independent.

Old city wandering and trolley: free. Forts about $10 each. Lunch $20-35. Bacardi tour $20-50 plus ferry. El Yunque tour $65-100. A full old-city day runs $40-70 per person.
