Ketchikan is Alaska's most walkable port: the gangway opens onto the town, Creek Street is ten minutes away, and the biggest sight - Misty Fjords - is a flight or boat trip, not a bus ride. Rain is the default, so plan for it. See Ketchikan's place page and the Inside Passage route.
Getting ashore
Most ships dock directly downtown; on multi-ship days some berth at Ward Cove, seven miles north, with shuttle service to the center. If your ship is downtown, you step off into the middle of everything. Ward Cove passengers should budget 20 minutes each way.
What to do in 6-10 hours
Start with Creek Street, the historic boardwalk on stilts over the creek - galleries, salmon watching in season, and the town's best photo walk, all free and ten minutes from the dock. The Totem Heritage Center and Saxman Native Village hold the world's largest totem-pole collection; Saxman runs $40-50 by tour or taxi. The signature splurge is a Misty Fjords floatplane ($250-350, 2 hours) - the most dramatic scenery in Southeast Alaska - or the cheaper boat version ($150-200). The Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show beside the dock is an easy, entertaining hour at about $40. Eagles, harbor seals and spawning salmon often appear without any tour at all.
Walking level
Downtown and Creek Street: easy and flat, 1-2 miles. The Totem Heritage Center is an uphill ten-minute walk or a short taxi ride. Boardwalks can be slick when wet - which is most days - so shoes with grip matter more here than anywhere in Alaska. Ward Cove docking adds no real walking beyond the shuttle.
Excursion or independent
Independent for Creek Street, the totem centers and the lumberjack show - everything is close and ticketed at the door, saving $20-40 per person. Book Misty Fjords flightseeing through the ship or a weather-flexible operator: flights cancel in low cloud and the ship's version protects your schedule.
