Icy Strait Point is Alaska's only purpose-built cruise port - a restored cannery complex owned by the Native village of Hoonah - and the port with the best whale watching in the Inside Passage. Getting ashore
Ships dock or tender directly at the cannery complex; the whole port is a ten-minute flat walk end to end. The actual village of Hoonah is 1.5 miles up the road - a pleasant walk or a $5 shuttle. Everything is contained; no port buses needed.
What to do in 6-10 hours
The signature ride is the ZipRider, a 5,330-foot zipline from a mountain peak to the beach at $110-120 - one of the longest in the world. The real anchor for most travelers is whale watching: Icy Strait hosts some of Alaska's densest humpback activity, with 3-hour tours at $150-200 and sighting success close to guaranteed in season. The cannery museum and shops are free; the Skyglider gondola and mountain trails add views. Hoonah itself offers totem carving and a genuine Native-village afternoon. Bears appear on the wilderness-bear tours ($150-250) in late summer.
Walking level
The port complex is flat, compact and partly paved - the easiest Alaska port to cover. The Hoonah walk is a flat 1.5 miles on a quiet road. The zipline requires a gondola ride and a short walk, not climbing. Bear tours involve uneven terrain. Overall: very manageable.
Excursion or independent
The port complex, museum and Hoonah are free or nearly free independently. The zipline is walk-up bookable on most days - no need for the ship's premium. Whale tours are the one case for booking ahead, either ship-side or with the port's own operators (the port runs guaranteed-return tours since the ship is right there).
