Hawaii is eight main islands, six of which receive visitors, spread over about 600 kilometres. They are volcanic and arranged by age — youngest and most geologically active in the south-east, oldest and most eroded in the north-west — which is why they look so different from one another.
The single most common planning error is trying to see three or four in ten days. Each inter-island hop costs a morning at one airport and an afternoon at another, plus a car return and a car collection. Two islands in ten days is comfortable. Three is a travel schedule.

How to choose in one line each
- First time, want everything: Oʻahu. It has the history, the food, a real city and famous surf, and it is the cheapest to reach.
- Want to lie down but also see things: Maui.
- Want landscape and geology: the Big Island. It is the only place you can stand near active lava flows and drive from beach to near-alpine in two hours.
- Want the most beautiful: Kauaʻi, without much argument. Also the wettest.
- Want nobody around: Molokaʻi.
Two islands, not four. The classic strong pairing is Oʻahu plus one other — you arrive and depart through Honolulu anyway, so the extra hop is short. Big Island plus Maui also works well. Adding a third island to a ten-day trip costs you roughly a day and a half of actual holiday.
The cruise option
Inter-island cruising exists and solves the hopping problem entirely — you sleep on the ship, wake in a different island, and never see an airport or a rental counter. A seven-night circuit typically covers four islands.
The trade is the same as everywhere: a day per island rather than several, and you see the ports rather than the interiors. For a first visit where the goal is to work out which island to return to, it is a genuinely sensible format.
Practical points
- A car is essential on every island except in Waikīkī. Book it well ahead; Hawaii has had real rental shortages.
- Haleakalā sunrise requires a reservation, released in advance and limited. It is a 3am start and it is cold at 3,000 metres — genuinely cold, in Hawaii.
- Volcanic activity varies. What is visible on the Big Island changes month to month; check the park's current status rather than relying on photographs.
- Reef-safe sunscreen is law. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are banned; bring mineral sunscreen or buy locally.
- Respect the closures. Some sites are sacred, some are on private land, and some — including areas affected by the 2023 Maui fires — are subject to requests from residents about visiting. These are not bureaucratic obstacles; treat them as the conditions of being welcome.
- The windward (north-east) side of each island is wet and green; the leeward side is dry. Resorts are on the leeward side for the same reason as in the Canaries.
When to go
Hawaii has no bad season — the temperature range across the year is small. Winter brings bigger surf on north shores, whale season (roughly December to April), more rain, and peak prices over the holidays. Late spring and autumn are the value windows with the calmest water.
