Flam is a tiny fjord village built around two world-class journeys: the Flamsbana railway and the Naeroyfjord boat. Both sell out months ahead, so this is Norway’s book-before-you-sail port. See the Flam place page and the Norwegian Fjords route.
Getting ashore
Most ships dock beside the railway station; larger calls may tender to the same center. Everything in the village is within five flat minutes. Tender delay is the only transfer issue.
What to do in 6-10 hours
The Flamsbana climbs 866 m to Myrdal in 50 minutes; return tickets cost roughly NOK 750-850 and the round trip takes two hours. The Naeroyfjord electric boat to Gudvangen costs about NOK 700-1,000, with bus return. Stegastein viewpoint buses cost NOK 450-650. Pick railway plus one short walk, or fjord boat plus viewpoint.
Walking level
Village and station are completely flat; trains are accessible with advance notice. Stegastein requires almost no walking. The Brekkefossen waterfall hike is steep and muddy - not an easy stroll. Flam is excellent for limited mobility if you choose train or bus.
Excursion or independent
Book rail and fjord tickets direct months ahead; the station and pier sit beside the ship, so ship markup buys little. If direct tickets are sold out, the ship excursion may hold inventory. The full trade-off is in ship excursion or independent.

Rail NOK 750-850 return; Naeroyfjord NOK 700-1,000; Stegastein NOK 450-650; lunch NOK 250-400. A full day runs NOK 1,200-2,000 per person.
