Cozumel is the Western Caribbean's busiest port and its easiest independent day: cheap taxis, swimmable beaches and one small ruin site, all within 20 minutes of the pier. Getting ashore
All three piers are walk-off, no tenders. From Puerta Maya or the International Pier, licensed taxis run $8-12 to downtown San Miguel or the beach clubs; Punta Langosta passengers step straight into town. Taxi rates are fixed and posted - confirm the price before getting in.
What to do in 6-10 hours
Most travelers pick one of three days. Beach day: day-pass clubs like Paradise Beach or Mr. Sanchos run $40-80 with food and drinks. Snorkeling: boat trips to Palancar or El Cielo reefs cost $50-90 for three hours - the island's signature. Culture: San Gervasio, the island's small Mayan site, is a $15 entry plus $20-25 round-trip taxi, and pairs with lunch in San Miguel. The waterfront malecon, main square and shops around Punta Langosta fill the spare hours for free.
Walking level
Downtown San Miguel is flat and compact. Beach clubs are flat with sandy entries. San Gervasio is mostly level gravel paths with some uneven stones - manageable with good shoes, not ideal for wheelchairs. One caution: midday heat is serious here; plan shade and water into any walking.
Excursion or independent
Cozumel is strongly independent-friendly: fixed-price taxis and walk-up beach clubs cover the two most popular days for $30-60 less per person than ship tours. Book through the ship only for snorkeling boats (small operators vary in quality) and anything on the mainland like Tulum, where distance makes the guaranteed return matter.
