Getting ashore
The port runs a free shuttle to the terminal gate; from there it is a 15-minute walk or local bus to Civitavecchia station. Regional trains to Rome's Termini and San Pietro stations cost about €5 each way and take 60-80 minutes; they run two to three times an hour. Private transfers run €120-150 per car each way. Ship transfers cost more but remove the train logistics.
What to do in 6-10 hours
Rome in one day means two anchors, not five. The classic pair: the Colosseum (timed entry €18-24, book well ahead) plus the Vatican (Museums and Sistine Chapel €20-25, timed entry essential). Between them, the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona are free and walkable as a loop. Trying to add more converts the day into a transport exercise. A €5 gelato break is part of the plan, not a luxury.
Walking level
Rome's center is mostly flat but vast - a Colosseum-to-Pantheon-to-Trevi loop is 3-4 miles on cobblestones and ancient paving that tires ankles. The Vatican adds long museum corridors. Comfortable shoes are mandatory; consider taxis or the metro between anchors. The Colosseum has elevators to the upper levels; the Roman Forum is rough underfoot.
Excursion or independent
The train makes Rome one of the cheapest independent days in the Med - €10 return versus €80-150 per person on the ship's transfer. The catch is the return: leave Rome at least four hours before all-aboard, and consider a private transfer if your call is short. Book monument tickets yourself, weeks ahead.
