Barcelona is one of Europe's great cruise cities and one of its most manageable: the port shuttle drops you at the bottom of Las Ramblas, and the headline sights are a short taxi or metro ride from there. Getting ashore
Most ships dock at the Moll Adossat piers, about 2 km from the city. The blue Portbus shuttle runs every 20-30 minutes for about €3 each way to the Columbus Monument at the foot of Las Ramblas. A taxi costs around €10-12 to the Ramblas and roughly €20-25 to the Sagrada Familia. No tenders; wheelchair-accessible shuttles run on request.
What to do in 6-10 hours
The day splits into Gaudi and old town. For Gaudi: the Sagrada Familia (timed entry €26-36, book weeks ahead), plus Park Guell (€10, timed) if you want a second monument - note both involve hills or metro rides. For the old town: the Gothic Quarter, the cathedral, the Boqueria market and the Ramblas are all free and flat. The classic single-day plan is Sagrada at opening, Gothic Quarter and tapas after. Beach at Barceloneta is a flat 15-minute walk from the port shuttle stop if the day is hot.
Walking level
The Gothic Quarter and Ramblas are flat and easy - 2-3 gentle miles covers them. Park Guell is a hill park with steps and slopes; skip it on bad-knee days. The Sagrada itself is flat but has queues and standing time. Barcelona is one of the more wheelchair-friendly ports in the Med, with step-free metro lines and accessible taxis.
Excursion or independent
Barcelona is the strongest independent port in the Western Med: the shuttle plus metro or a couple of taxis covers everything for a fraction of the ship's city tour. The only thing to pre-book is monument entry, not transport. Ship excursions make sense only for Montserrat, the monastery an hour away. The full trade-off is in ship excursion or independent.
